Abstract The prediction of the buckling resistance shells is subject to uncertainty since it depends significantly on initial geometric imperfections caused by fabrication process. However, load case vacuum or uniform external pressure has not yet been extensively studied. Stress design approaches implement a reduction factor alpha that accounts for effect imperfections. This assumed be general lower bound but does account different ratios. expected imperfection sensitivities prevail cylinder lengths length thickness To better understand this aspect, comprehensive numerical study resistances imperfect cylindrical conducted, which covers range length, radius and ratios with focus thicker shorter cylinders. Within study, three forms are investigated: linear bifurcation eigenmodes, ovalisation weld depressions, represent typical manufacturing processes. Further, formulation longitudinal depressions introduced, direction more deleterious than axisymmetric circumferential depressions. results contribute understanding amplitudes dimensions.
